My journey into the IT world began pre-World Wide Web. While working for Parks Canada in Jasper, I developed AV presentations and programmed interactive touchscreen kiosks. I learned about the Internet (FTP, Gopher, Archie, Veronica…) and immediately saw its value in dissimating information.
Skip forward a few years and I was now webmaster at the Canadian Geographic magazine, this time pre-Google. I became facinated with creating interactive online maps and was able to strike a partnership between ESRI and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society for the ecucational use of an ArcIMS map server.
I completed a certificate in GIS and started freelancing as a GIS Analyst and Cartographer. I created an outdoor recreation map for a guidebook published by Espaces. The following 10 years allowed me to gain field experience and geospatial data analysis skills that became extremely valuable. I also began developping project management tools on company intranets in addition to web-based maps.
